ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) - A man who lost his bid for a seat on the Hertford Town Council says he'll ask state officials to examine whether the sheriff's department's decision to put him in jail days before the election affected the vote.
The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reports (http://bit.ly/uMJCHE) that Quentin Jackson says the court order that landed him in jail the Saturday before Election Day was 5 months old. Jackson finished last in a five-candidate race for two seats.
He was stopped Saturday at a checkpoint when he didn't have his driver's license. A trooper discovered the court order for Jackson's arrest on a contempt of court charge for failing to make child support payments.
Perquimans County Sheriff Eric Tilley says Jackson was treated just like anyone else arrested by his department.
