ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) - It's the time of year when people typically are encouraged to vote.

But in Pasquotank County, the Board of Elections is reminding people that they don't have to vote and no one should coerce them into doing so. The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported (http://bit.ly/oIVppa) that the board met Monday to hear a complaint that a staff member at Elizabeth City State University pressured students to vote.

The board heard the report from Deputy Elections Bonnie Godfrey, then explained that people can file a complaint with the board if they think they were subjected to coercion.

Godfrey described the incident that happened Friday when a student expressed ambivalence about whether to vote in Elizabeth City or at home.
