KINSTON, N.C. - Imagine sitting in your high school classroom, earning college credits- and doing it all in a virtual world.
There's a high school classroom in the east where students are taking college level classes in 3-D.
At first glance, this looks like many high school classes.
But a closer look reveals... These students at South Lenoir High School are actually in a college classroom, a virtual one that is.
East Carolina University uses a 3-D, virtual world called Second Life to host classes online.
Students create an avatar to represent themselves and particpate in class just like they would in a normal classroom.
Students listen to lectures from professors and take notes while being able to access the textbook online to help them better understand the material.
The classes offered are english, computer science, personal finance and biology.
Students must be in good academic standing to take the class and can register for the program at the beginning of the semester just like any other class.
College credits that students earn through the Second Life program are accepted by any college or university in the state.
ECU also has a Second Life program for students in Pitt County.
The Second Life program is part of the science, technology, engeneering and math or S.T.E.M. initiative.
Educators hope to expand the program into other districts.
