BEAUFORT, N.C. - There's a new system in the works to track down drivers if they pass a stopped school bus.
And it's being tested here in the east.
The Carteret County school system is one of five in the state selected to pilot a new school bus stop arm camera system.
Workers have already started installing the camera system.
Multiple cameras are placed inside and outside of the school bus.
If a driver goes past the bus when the stop arm sign is up, the cameras will capture the license plate.
The cameras will also help monitor student activity on the bus.
The pilot program is part of the Governor's Highway Safety Program and is provided at no cost.
