SNOW HILL, N.C. - Wouldn't it be nice if there was a house that could withstand anything mother nature could throw at it?
FEMA's newest innovation brings us one step closer to that.
Meet the D.A.W.G. H.A.U.S. It's name is an acronym that stands for Disaster Avoidance With Good Home Attenuating Unionization System.
This prototype shows new building techniques that could keep your home in one piece through the next big storm.
The model is built to withstand wind speeds up to 200 miles per hour, which means it will stand through a category five hurricane and a category 3 tornado. Flying debris from storms may damage a home built to dawg haus specifications, but the wind itself will not.
Building a D.A.W.G H.A.U.S. adds about five percent to the cost of building a home. So if you were building a 100 thousand dollar house, the cost would be about five grand.
The home model is on display at the Sweet Potato Festival in Greene County. After the hit they took from Irene and the tornadoes earlier this year, I expect it will get plenty of attention.
