SNOW HILL, N.C. - The last few months have not been easy on Greene County schools.
First, tornadoes ripped through the middle school. Now, Hurricane Irene left behind more damage at Greene Central High School.
Their brand new gym floor - wax still fresh - will have to be replaced.
"We had a skylight here blow out and when it blew out the edge of the roof membrane pulled up and the wind caught that. The hurricane winds pulled the membrane all back," said Don Marr, Principal of Greene Central High School.
Marr says it only took a few seconds for hundreds of gallons of water to poor through the ceiling, not only washing away their hopes of a new gym floor, but drenching the more than 200 people who were taking shelter in the gym from Hurricane Irene.
"We pull this back and we had dryers on it earlier before the adjuster got here, but if you feel down here, all this is wet and soaked."
At first glance, the gym seems just fine - no damage or water in sight, but Principal Don Marr says it's what you can't see that's the problem.
"We can't see it, but it's all wet underneath here and that water has to go somewhere and what it does, it goes into the wood and eventually the wood will peel up," said Marr.
Until the floor is repaired, winter sports like basketball could be in jeopardy, not only hurting the school's pride, but their wallet as well.
"Basketball, obviously, is a big revenue sport for us and we depend on the revenue from basketball games to fund the spring sports," said Patrick Miller, Greene County School’s Superintendent.
Miller says insurance and construction teams are preparing an estimate for the damage. It'll cost the schools at least $5,000 to meet their deductable.
"Every time $5,000 rolls around it does add up pretty quickly so, yeah, we're ready for our streak of bad luck to turn," said Miller.
Construction teams hope to have the gym floor completed by November 1st.
