PINETOPS, N.C. (AP) - Residents and businesses in two more counties can now qualify for grants or low-interest loans to help them recover from Hurricane Irene.
Gov. Beverly Perdue's office announced Thursday the federal government had added Lenoir and Halifax counties to the list of seven initial counties already approved Wednesday by President Obama for individual assistance. The earlier approved counties are Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Dare, Hyde, Pamlico and Tyrrell.
Perdue also said the state has asked the federal government for 20 counties to become eligible for federal aid so local governments can be compensated for removing debris and making infrastructure repairs.
Damage caused by the storm in eastern North Carolina is already estimated by authorities at $192 million and expected to get higher.
