CURRITUCK, N.C. (AP) - A Democratic legislator who sided with Republicans in cutting the state budget says he was surprised to learn that a school system in his district had to cut teaching assistant positions.
The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported that Pasquotank Rep. Bill Owens met with Currituck County school officials recently to find out why 26 teacher aide positions were cut in the 2011-2012 budget while the system maintained a $3 million fund balance.
Finance officer Kelly McClellan says the county withdrew more than $1 million from the reserves over three years. She says that allowed Currituck schools to hold on while other schools cut jobs.
Owens says he bargained to restore funds for teachers and teacher assistants, but he understands now why the Currituck positions were cut.
