GREENVILLE, N.C. - Supporters are hitting the streets today to raise support for a bill they say could save the U.S. Postal Service.

It’s happening on the corner of Greenville Blvd. and Charles Blvd.

Supporters are having what they call an informational rally not a protest. It’s all to inform the public about bill HR 1351.

They say the postal service has been under financial ruin because of a law passed in 2006 that requires them to pre-fund health benefits for the next 75 years which they say costs them more than 5 billion dollars each year.

The bill would allow them to spend the billions of dollars they've been saving, which the workers argue is the company’s money to begin with.

Congressman Walter B. Jones who is a co-sponsor of the bill came out to show his support.

Organizers say there are hundreds of these rallies planned for today in every congressional district across the country.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Postal workers across the country and here in the east will take to the streets in an effort to save their jobs.

The “Save America’s Postal Service” walk will be in Greenville from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Greenville Boulevard and Charles Boulevard. A walk is also planned in Wilson at the same time starting at Nash Street. Other walks will be in Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro and Wilmington.

According to the event’s official website, people at the rallies will visit the offices of their U.S. Representative to either thank them for supporting a measure they say addresses the financial problems with the Postal Service or to encourage their Representative to support it.
