WILSON, N.C. (AP) - A whirligig park being built in Wilson has received a $500,000 grant from 11 foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts.
ArtPlace announced earlier this month that the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park Project will receive the money through the city of Wilson. The new consortium is giving out more than $11 million to various projects.
The park already has received three grants from the North Carolina Arts Council for documentation, park design and conservation. The Arts Council is also providing technical expertise for the project.
The 92-year-old Simpson creates giant, wind-powered whirligig sculptures that museums, businesses and private collectors worldwide have bought.
The city of Wilson is acquiring the whirligigs, which will be located in an art park in downtown.
