JACKSONVILLE, N.C. Most of us have seen dogs get away from their owners before, but what happens when a dog gets loose and poses a threat to somone's safety?
9 On Your Side met with one home owner who has had problems with loose dogs on and around her property, and found out what she and others like her can do.
Crystal Johnson has been living a nightmare.
She says for the past two years. she and her family have been chased and bitten by loose dogs near their home.
"We went through the expense to put this fence up around part of our property and their dog was able to still get into our yard, attacked my husband and one of our other dogs."
The dog that was attacked received several stitches, but some of the Johnson's chickens weren't so lucky.
Crystal says things have gotten better since the family fenced in the yard around their home 18 months ago. But she says they still carry a shotgun for protection when they're on the other five acres of their property, outside the fence.
Onslow County Animal Services' new online complaint system may help Crystal and others in similar situations.
OCAS Director, Alan Davis explains how the new system works.
"What citizens can do is they can place an animal complaint. Which would be a routine animal complaint such as a dog running at large, barking dog, nuisance animal complaint. They can go online and then just follow the prompts and it'll send a request to our dispatcher within eight seconds."
The new system allows OCAS to recieve complaints in real-time even after business hours.
