GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – It’s the number one killer in the United States. Every 34 seconds someone dies of cardiovascular disease. That’s why doctors across the east are urging people to be more “heart healthy”
Vidant Medical Center hosted its 4th Annual Heart Expo on Saturday. Heart disease is a growing epidemic, especially in the east.
"With our unique cultural habits, our eating habits and our history, we know that we are at a very high risk for heart disease across this community,” said Senior Vice President, Van Smith.
But with a little education it is preventable. That was the message experts sent out at this year’s Heart Expo. Doctors were on hand at the Greenville Convention Center to teach people about the risks and dangers of cardiovascular disease. The Expo featured everything from question and answer sessions to free cooking and exercise classes.
"It's like a free mini doctors visit. And all of the exhibits and the information is just awesome,” said Ledndell Wayne, who drives in every year from Kinston.
While the Expo was open to people of all ages, many of the doctors there say the focus should be on the children.
"Dealing with the epidemic of childhood obesity, dealing with how they eat at school, dealing with how they eat at home… the future is in our children,” said Dr. Mark Williams, Heart Surgeon at the Brody School of Medicine.
