GREENVILLE, N.C. - An ECU bus involved in a chain reaction accident sent 5 people to the hospital.
It happened shortly before noon on 10th Street right beside the Newman Catholic Student Center.
“Each time there is a collision, certainly you always worry because it's a large vehicle, there's a lot of traffic out on the highway, injuries, you always worry about injuries, you don't want anybody to be injured,” explained Wood Davidson, ECU Transit Director.
Greenville Police say the bus crashed into the back of this car and the car then crashed into the truck.
The vehicles were stopped while a car was turning into the Newman Center.
“I understand the Acura was hit pretty hard, pretty solid,” said Sgt. Joe Friday, Greenville Police Department.
5 people in the car were taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
All ECU transit bus drivers are current ECU students.
In this case, police have charged the male driver with failure to reduce speed. It's not known if he will face other charges.
The transit director says there are cameras on the bus, showing both video inside and outside of the bus which will help with the ongoing investigation.
“We are going to follow our policies and procedures for a collision. The driver has been removed from service as we go through our investigation process,” said Davidson.
He says the busses travel about a million miles a year and they average a preventable accident every 40,000 miles.
Those preventable accidents could be like this crash or as minor as a mirror strike.
The condition of the people taken to the hospital is not known at this time.
