GREENVILLE, N.C. - A member of a family made famous from the movie The Blind Side paid a visit to the east.
Collins Tuohy, sister of NFL star Michael Oher came to share her story and raise awareness about helping at risk youth.
Just in case you haven't heard their story, the Tuohy family adopted Oher when he was basically on the streets, and gave him a chance at life.
He is now one of the most famous players to play for the Baltimore Ravens.
"Kids surprise people and you just got to give them a chance," said Collins.
She shared her family’s story as hundreds gathered in Greenville to share a meal, and spread some hope.
The building hope community life center hosted its annual fundraiser to increase support and awareness about the importance of helping at risk kids.
"In Greenville you've got the pressures of gangs, the pressures to do drugs, the pressures are endless out there,” said Lesli Grandy, Development Director of Building Hope Community Life Center.
"This is your future. These are kids that can one day run your city, your town, your businesses, you just have no idea what their potential is because certainly no one ever thought that Michael was going to be on of the most successful youths of this county,” Collins said.
The organization sets up after-school programs, job skills training, and offers mentors who can support them through life.
"We want for them to walk down the halls in their schools and walk down the streets in their neighborhoods and see a group of kids that stand for the same things they do,” said Grandy.
Giving others a second chance is something Tuohy knows all about.
"Organizations like this help those who necessarily don't need to be adopted, are in a family but just struggling with life. To give them that push they need to keep going and be successful,” said Collins.
