RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - As 2012 begins, North Carolina is on the cusp of an unparalleled year in politics.
The political year will be anchored by the Democratic National Convention gathering in Charlotte in September, when President Barack Obama will be nominated for a second term. North Carolina is expected to be a battleground state again since Obama won the state by just 14,000 votes in 2008.
Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue and Republican Pat McCrory appear poised for a fierce rematch of their 2008 race - the closest gubernatorial election since 1972.
The Republican majority in the Legislature will aim to retain both chambers it earned in 2010 for the first time in 140 years.
The May primary also will include a referendum to add a gay marriage ban to the state constitution.
