WILSON, N.C. (AP) - Some residents are complaining about what they are paying for electricity from the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency.

The Wilson Daily Times reported that a number of people testified before a legislative committee Tuesday.

The newspaper reported residents in the 32 cities served by the agency are paying almost 4 cents more per kilowatt hour than the average North Carolinian.

Thomas Stith with the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise says the rates are especially difficult for those in eastern North Carolina.

The Joint Municipal Power Agency Relief committee is looking for ways to reduce customer costs.

Graham Edwards with the company that manages the agency says it has sought ways to reduce costs and lighten the burden for its electric customers, including refinancing some of its debt.
