TOPSAIL ISLAND N.C. - Residents of North Topsail Beach are once again fighting to save their homes as erosion threatens to damage properties along the beach. We wanted to know what, if anything can be done to fix the erosion problem and save the fragile coastline.
Eroded beach fronts are becoming a more common sight along North Topsail beach due to recent storms.
The erosion is primarily affecting the island's north end, which is concentrated on New River Inlet Road. Homes near the end of the road are most at risk.
Erosion along the town's north end has been a problem for a number of years, but the town is working toward a solution.
Realigning the New River Inlet to lessen the effects of erosion, a long and expensive project.
But what can home owners do to protect their property until the project begins? The answer is not very much. The easiest option is to sandbag the area around their homes, but to do so they would need a permit.
A case where time may not be on the side of oceanfront home owners as the oceanfront view gets much too close for comfort.
North Topsail Beach Town Manager, Steve Foster says the town will assist residents seeking permits to help them get the permits as quickly as possible.
