WASHINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina House member says he will defend the views of conservative supporters if he gets elected to the state Senate.
Republican Rep. Bill Cook of Beaufort County announced Wednesday he would run for a Senate seat, rather than seek a second House term. The Washington Daily News reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/wYZigQ ) that Cook told supporters at a Washington pizza place he would be the antithesis of a liberal approach to government.
Cook wants the 1st Senate District seat held by Democratic Senate leader Marc Basnight for more than 20 years until his resignation last year. Current Democratic Sen. Stan White is seeking re-election.
Redistricting placed Cook and Rep. Tim Spear of Washington County in the same House district. Neither lawmaker is seeking re-election to the House.
