HAVELOCK, N.C. (WNCT) - Havelock is a military town to the core, so it’s only natural town leadership wanted to do something to honor the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

For some Craven County residents….it’s personal.  Ten years later, former New York city police office Tony Michalek still gets choked up when the thinks back to September 11th 2001.

“I lost 14 men from my old unit,” says Michalek.

Two of those men Sergeant Mike Curtain and Detective Joe Viggiano were close to him.

Last fall when a beam from the World Trade Center arrived in Havelock it inspired people like Michalek to find ways to give back.  He joined the memorial’s planning committee and his first order of business was to make the memorial complete.

"There's not that many memorials that have all three sites represented,” he says.

So he along with a few other volunteers worked tirelessly to make it happen.

After completing a slew of paperwork and getting all of the approvals.  He and another volunteer drove to Washington, D.C and rural Pennsylvania to retrieve the artifacts.

The 9-11 memorial is scheduled to be completed this summer in plenty of time for a dedication ceremony this September.
