NEW BERN, N.C. - Investigators have determined the cause of one fire and are still investigating a second that happened within an hour of each other.
A city spokesperson tells 9 On Your Side that the first fire happened on Ft. Totten Drive. It was called in around 11:30 a.m.
The fire happened in a garage that had been converted into apartments and was completely gutted in the blaze. Fire investigators say overloaded extension cords were the cause of the fire.
The second fire was reported about forty-five minutes later in an abandoned home at the end of Gaston Boulevard.
While they battled the second fire, employees and children at a child care center about a 1/4 of a mile down the street were advised to stay indoors, just to make sure the children didn't breath in smoke.
It took firefighters about thiry minutes to put both fires out.
New Bern Fire-Rescue Chief Bobby Aster commenting on the weather and its impact on his firefighters said, “Windy conditions pose a challenge for us, and you have to be careful. The wind can cause you to lose control of a fire quickly. I’m glad we were able to knock these fires down and that no one was hurt.”
