WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) - Police are investigating a small fire in a middle school's restroom today.
Students and teachers are safe and back in class this afternoon after the fire forced them to evacuate P.S. Jones Middle School in Washington this morning.
Beaufort County Schools spokesperson Sarah Hodges says the fire started around eight o'clock this morning.
Every student and staff member evacuated the building. Because it was raining earlier this morning, they crossed the parking lot and waited inside John Small Elementary School.
Fire crews contained the fire and no one was injured.
Students were able to come back inside around ten o'clock this morning.
Hodges says students who would have been working in that immediate area where the fire started have been relocated to other classrooms for the rest of the day.
