Campaign to reject NC gay marriage vote begins

Legal - Gay Marriage

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Opponents of a North Carolina voter referendum on banning gay marriage say they hope to have 1 million conversations with people before the May primary about the far-reaching effects of changing the state constitution.

The Coalition to Protect All North Carolina Families unveiled campaign plans at a news conference Wednesday in Raleigh to launch its effort to defeat the amendment question put on the ballot by the state Legislature.

Speakers said the amendment goes beyond making clear gay marriage is not recognized in the state and would prevent state-sanctioned civil unions and domestic partnerships, too. They say it would breed fear among gay and lesbian people and their family members, particularly children.

A group that wants the amendment to pass says opponents have overblown the amendment's impact.
