MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Officials down east have discovered a rabid raccoon.
It happened last Friday afternoon.
Officials with the Carteret County Health Department Animal Control say they got a call from a Morehead City resident that the raccoon had killed one of their chickens. Two family dogs were subsequently bitten after they went after the raccoon.
The injured racoon was put down, remains were sent to the NC State Laboratory for Public Health, and results showed the raccoon was positive for rabies.
Officials have talked with homeowners in the area about the rabid raccoon and reminded them to make sure their cats and dogs are vaccinated.
“The key message is to vaccinate your pets and report any unusual behavior in wildlife or domestic animals as soon as possible to local law enforcement, 911 or Animal Control,” said Hardy.
The last known rabies cases in the county were in October.
