GREENVILLE, N.C. - A former Green Beret from North Carolina who was convicted of torturing terrorism suspects in a private jail in Afghanistan is dead.

Mexican authorities confirm Jonathan "Jack" Idema died of AIDS on January 21st.

He moved to Mexico after being released from prison in Afghanistan in 2007.

He was an active duty Special Forces soldier for about three years in the 70's. He eventually settled in Fayetteville.

Idema spent time in prison for fraud and he sued Stephen Spielberg accusing him of stealing his life story.

Idema also claims the jail he was running in Afghanistan was Pentagon-approved. U.S. officials deny that claim.

Idema was 55 years old.
