RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCT) -- In North Carolina, pets are considered property but a couple wants to change that after the tragic death of their 12-year-old Jack Russell.
Herb and Nancy Shera want the law changed after their dog died when she suffocated at N.C. State. Veterinarians accidently put a feeding tube in her lungs and the university was ruled at fault. The Shera's aren't fighting for money but rather the courts to recognize the value of a pet.
“That Laci's horrific death could possibly help other animals and their owners, then I just had to do I,” Nancy said.
The state's attorney said it's too difficult to put a dollar value on pets and the state Veterinary Medical Association says this would open a floodgate of lawsuits and raise vet bills.
The Court of Appeals will likely take months to rule on this case.
