Rabies reported in Onslow County cat

• Have a veterinarian vaccinate your cats and dogs every year for rabies.
• Don't feed or touch wild animals. Rabid animals don't always appear ill or vicious.
• Never leave pet food outside as this attracts wildlife.
• Tightly close garbage cans and dumpsters. Open trash attracts wild animals.
• If bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately clean the wound with soap and water, and then seek medical attention.
• Animal bites should be reported immediately to Animal Services at 910-937-1166
• Report any sick or injured raccoons, foxes or bats. Call Animal Care's Dispatch Unit at 910-937-1165, weekdays, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Or 911 Dispatch between 5:00 p.m. and 8 a.m. on weekdays, and 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - A domestic cat is Onslow County's first rabies case of the year.

Officials say Animal Control Officers reported to a Swansboro residence on January 18th in reference to a sick cat.

The animal was picked up and impounded for observation and quarantine until it was found dead on January 23rd. The State Laboratory confirmed on January 25th the cat tested positive for rabies.

Onslow County Animal Services has increased its surveillance in the rabies alert area and will impound any stray cats or dogs.
