JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - A domestic cat is Onslow County's first rabies case of the year.
Officials say Animal Control Officers reported to a Swansboro residence on January 18th in reference to a sick cat.
The animal was picked up and impounded for observation and quarantine until it was found dead on January 23rd. The State Laboratory confirmed on January 25th the cat tested positive for rabies.
Onslow County Animal Services has increased its surveillance in the rabies alert area and will impound any stray cats or dogs.
