COVE CITY, N.C. (WNCT) – A guard rail will soon be installed on a Craven County curve where at least two people were killed and a 9-year-old girl spent days trapped in the car after a crash.
A spokesperson for the DOT says after the accident back in November that killed 33-year-old Doug Landon, an investigation was launched by the traffic engineering branch out of Wilson.
Their goal was to evaluate if there is anything the department can do to prevent future accidents on the curve.
According to Landon's friends, another accident occured in the same spot years ago killing a local minister's wife.
Nine on Your Side has learned the degree of the roadway does not typically warrant a guard rail, but because there is a history of accidents, the DOT decided to move forward with the traffic engineering recommendations.
DOT officials are searching for a contractor and say construction could begin as early as a week from now.
Back in December during an exclusive interview Landon's family and friends spoke out about the dangerous curve.
Claudette Leohmann told Nine on Your side a guardrail would have stopped the 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo carrying her 9-year-old daughter Jordan and Jordan's father, Doug, from landing upside down in a cement ravine.
The car was hidden from view for two days.
"Nobody - the rescue, the highway patrol - nobody saw Doug's car. So if there was a guard rail there, we would have known," said Tyker Gonzales, a family friend.
