NC Congress members want answers on Lejeune report

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (AP) - Both of North Carolina's senators and other members of Congress want to know why information was removed from a report on drinking water contamination at Camp Lejeune.

In a letter sent last week to the director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the lawmakers ask why information about the locations of water systems now used at Lejeune was redacted from a report released this month.

A CDC agency is researching the effects of chemical contamination of water at the base from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Sen. Kay Hagan says removing the information sets a troubling precedent for the future of the research into Lejeune. She wants full transparency in the process.

Calls to the CDC and the Marine Corps were not immediately returned Tuesday.
