PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) The state Senate Education Committee is scheduled to vote today on legislation minimizing school transfers for foster children. The bill would direct child welfare officials to keep a foster child enrolled in their original school whenever possible.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) The state health director has OKed the sale of financially-troubled Landmark Health Systems to a for-profit Massachusetts hospital group. Dr. Michael Fine said he's approving the deal for Steward Health Care System to take over Landmark and its for-profit subsidiary, Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) More new businesses registered with the state in the first quarter of this year than in any quarter since 2008. It could be a sign that the state's economy is improving. Secretary of State Ralph Mollis says nearly 2,000 new business entities registered with his office this year through April.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Rhode Island College is holding a special reception for one of its graduates -- Academy Award-nominated actress Viola Davis. The reception is set for this afternoon at the president's house. Davis grew up in Central Falls and earned her undergraduate degree at the college in 1988.
