Commissioned to guard Beaufort Inlet and Beaufort Harbor as North Carolina's only major deepwater ocean port in the 1800’s, Fort Macon is today the second most visited state park in North Carolina. The fort played major roles from the War of 1812 to the Civil War. Fort Macon also offers public beach access in addition to being an historic landmark. Located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, the park is surrounded on three sides by water—the Atlantic Ocean, Beaufort Inlet and Bogue Sound. This area of undisturbed natural beauty is the perfect place to explore salt marshes and estuaries vital to the coastal ecosystem. Click here to learn more.
Explore the marine life of our state at The N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, home to the magnificent 306,000-gallon ocean tank, The “Living Shipwreck”. Featuring a life-sized replica of a German U-352 submarine and Blackbeard’s infamous ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, found nearby a decade ago, the tank teams with hundreds of fish, including eels and sea turtles and especially: SHARKS! Exhibits focus on animals from North Carolina, with one of the most popular being three playful river otters. Click here for more information.
Come to the Grand Opening Season of “Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge”, the first permanent exhibit of the artifacts from Blackbeard’s flagship. Much more than just a museum, the NC Maritime Museum is dedicated to preserving North Carolina’s rich marine heritage and offering people the opportunity to experience it in meaningful and interactive ways: Exhibits, workshops, curator-led field trips, a Watercraft center with ship models, wooden boat construction and restoration, and annual events. Catch a glimpse of the Wild Horses of Shackleford Banks. Although the circumstances of their arrival remains a mystery, legend has it that these horses, descended from an older breed of Spanish horses, were perhaps shipwrecked or left behind by an early Spanish exploratory expedition, sometime in the sixteen hundreds. The fact that they have survived and thrived in this environment, exhibiting characteristics not found in any other herd in the world, makes protecting our “Banker” Horses one of North Carolina’s most cherished privileges.
