GREENVILLE, N.c. - “We decided to back off of building a new press box because it was going to involve having premium seating, club seats, and suites. We didn’t think it was a good time in this economy in Eastern North Carolina to sell those so that’s down the road; that’s coming," said Senior Associate Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass.
Bass said it may be a few years before the school gets the new additions, but he didn't say how much phase two renovations would cost.
Meanwhile other sports like softball and track and field are also currently being upgraded.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Finishing touches are being put in place at Dowdy Ficklen Stadium. It's the start of a new season, under a new head coach with brand new stadium additions.
"If you wait until you need the seats it's too late. Eastern North Carolina's growing. The corporate base and so what we're looking for is where do we need to be ten years from now," said Senior Associate Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass.
Pirate fans-- they appear to be on the same page. Their reception has been well-- record breaking-- to the tune of $ 5.3-million in season ticket sales alone.
“All time record-ugh- more than over 22,300 tickets have been sold,” said Bass.
Bass says there are thousands of new seat covers, which he calls “chair backs”. They make a sea of purple on both sides of the stadium. Cheering ECU students will be relocated from their old seats near the 50-yard-line.
The $20-million renovation project includes seating for 7,000. The area will be used for students and for band members. The new scoreboard right above is one of the largest in the nation. The once small program is steadily growing and now the football stadium will better match it.
“Within two years you won't recognize our facilities here,” said Bass.
From the entrances and exits to the concession stands and restrooms, the Pirate nation is being improved. With game day inching closer, eager fans won't have to wait much longer.
