NEW YORK (AP) - Mark McGwire says he always knew the day would come when he had to "confirm what people suspected."
The former slugger is admitting for the first time that he used steroids while breaking baseball's single-season home run record in 1998.
An emotional McGwire's voice repeatedly cracked during a 20-minute telephone interview with The Associated Press as he talked about using steroids off and on for a decade and hiding it from everybody.
McGwire called the steroid use "foolish" and said he used them to overcome injuries and justify his multi-million dollar contract -- insisting he never used them for strength.
When he testified before Congress in 2005, McGwire refused to answer questions about whether he took steroids. But today he said he felt an obligation to come clean, spurred by his new job as St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach.
