There's big news out of ECU basketball.
The Pirates wrapped up a disappointing regular season at home against Southern Mississippi.
After the game, Coach Mack McCarthy announced his resignation.
McCarthy had tremendous success in building programs at Tennessee Chattanooga and at VCU, but he took over a very difficult situation when Ricky Stokes stepped down at ECU three years ago.
Coach McCarthy announced his decision to resign effective at the end of the season after Saturday’s loss to Southern Miss. 75-65.
Coach McCarthy was 34-56 in three seasons as the head coach at ECU.
That first year his title was acting Head Coach and then he was promoted two years ago.
Mack's overall coaching record is 367-269.
McCarthy will have at least one more game coming up Wednesday against Houston in the first round of the Conference-USA tournament and he will stay on in an administrative role with East Carolina.
