JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Injuries are pretty common in high school sports. Sprains and pulled muscles are risks athletes take when they suit up, but this week one local athlete suffered an injury that has a whole community hoping for the best.
Hugo Rubirosa's record was 16 wins and two losses going into Tuesday's wrestling match against West Carteret.
But the Jacksonville High School junior would leave the gym on a stretcher.
During the match, Rubirosa suffered a neck injury that required surgery.
Students at Jacksonville High describe Hugo as a down to earth person who loves to make people laugh.
Faculty say he's an outstanding student that works as hard in the classroom as he does on the mat.
Jacksonville High School Principal, Dr. Donna Lynch visited Hugo and his family Wednesday night, she says his outlook in the injury is amazing.
Faculty and student organizations plan to visit Hugo at the hospital.
His wrestling team mates say they will visit him on Saturday.
Rubirosa underwent surgery for his injury Wednesday at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. He is listed in serious condition.
