SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The weather system that has brought extreme cold to the West and Midwest is blamed for at least nine deaths.
An avalanche in Colorado killed a Ski Patrol member. Exposure probably killed an 87-year-old man found outside his Montana nursing home. And weather-related car accidents are responsible for three deaths in Oklahoma and two each in North Dakota and Missouri.
Arctic air sent temperatures plunging to record lows well below zero. Record lows included minus 19 in Denver.
