Up to 8 inches of snow is expected in parts of western North Carolina as a strong cold front moves into the region. The National Weather Service said Tuesday that bitter wind chills and strong wind gusts will continue through Wednesday across the North Carolina mountains. The heaviest snowfall is expected overnight. Forecasters said an upper level storm system is moving southeast across the central and southern Appalachians. The system is expected to create numerous snow showers and wind gusts of up to 40 mph. Wind chills could drop 10 degrees below zero. Four to 8 inches of snow is expected along the western slopes at higher elevations. Forecasters said lower elevations and the foothills could see up to 2 inches of snow.
