An arctic high pressure system - the same one which guided cold winds into Eastern Carolina yesterday - will still be situated to the west of our state this Thursday. That means we should expect another sunny but very cold day! Temperatures will get no higher than the mid 30s and brisk north winds will keep wind chills in the 10s and 20s all day. On this dry and breezy day, use extreme caution if you plan on outdoor burning.
Tonight, as the arctic high moves over North Carolina, winds will relax, but temperatures will plummet to the coldest levels of this cold snap. Lows will range from 16-22 for most inland areas to 26-30 for most coastal areas. Thankfully, with little or no wind, I expect no additional wind chill factor to add to an already frigid Friday morning.
During the day Friday, the arctic high will move into the Atlantic and remain there into next week. The new position of this high favors milder south breezes to reach Eastern Carolina - and temperatures will respond in a huge way! Expect highs in the 40s Friday, 50s Saturday, and 60s Sunday and Monday, and temperatures may even reach 70 by midweek next week!
