(AP) - A batch of late December rainfall has slightly eased drought conditions in eastern North Carolina.
The U.S. Drought Monitor released a report Thursday that shows more than half of the state is in exceptional drought, which is the most severe condition. Last week, about two-thirds of North Carolina was in that category.
Counties along the Virginia border and the coast are still under extreme or severe drought.
Governor Mike Easley is still asking residents to conserve water. The first few months of 2008 are expected to be dry. He said failure to conserve will make the drought worse and continue to strain water supplies.
The governor's office said about 5.45 million people in the state are under water use restrictions.
