(AP) - Fernley, Nevada residents are awaiting word from federal and state officials on what relief will be offered to the flooded desert town.
Water is still up to three feet deep in some parts and some residents are waiting to be allowed back into their homes. The water is receding following a rupture at an irrigation canal that sent water spilling into the town Saturday. The mayor says authorities are working as hard as they can to clear the town's streets of the icy water.
Federal and state officials surveyed the town by helicopter today with U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. The Nevada Democrat says he'll do everything he can to "get the people back in their houses."
Investigators are trying to figure out why the icy water flooded the town 8 feet deep in some parts after heavy rains.
One possible factor officials have mentioned is rodents burrowing holes in the earthen bank at the canal.
