Earl "Behaves" According to Forecast – Offshore Track Spares Eastern NC Brunt of Storm

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

Hi, I'm Storm Team 9 Meteorologist Gannon Medwick with your FORECAST FOR EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA:  In the wake of Hurricane Earl, an unseasonably hot Friday is ahead.  A high pressure system will bring a more pleasant brand of warmth for Labor Day Weekend.

EARL RECAP:  Thankfully, Earl “behaved” according to this week’s Storm Team 9 Forecast.  Late Thursday night, the dangerous eye wall of Hurricane Earl passed 100 miles east of the Outer Banks – thus sparing eastern North Carolina its full fury.  As expected, near-hurricane-force wind gusts touched the Outer Banks (74mph wind gust at Dare County’s Bonner Bridge and 67mph at USCGS Hatteras).  Highway 12 experienced overwash in places - especially Mirlo Beach.  Power poles had reportedly caught fire in Southern Shores as well.  Crystal Coast and Inner Banks wind gust reached solid tropical storm-force.  Also as expected, inland areas struggled to reach tropical storm-force winds.  Rain totals from ranged from near 0.25” at Greenville and Kinston to 1 to 4” from Carteret County to the Outer Banks.

FRIDAY FORECAST DETAILS:  Classic post-hurricane heat is ahead for Friday as a high pressure system builds in the wake of Earl.  Expect highs in the mid 90s inland and upper 80s and lower 90s for coastal sections.  Winds will be of a dry, westerly quality mainly at speeds of 10 to 15mph.  Temperatures will cool quickly through the 80s for evening football.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND FORECAST DETAILS:  A weak front could form a stray shower Saturday, otherwise expect dry conditions.  Daily highs will be in the 80s (nice and toasty, but not terribly hot, for ECU football!) and nighttime lows will range from the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Be sure to view the accompanying 7-Day Forecast graphic and video forecast for more forecast details!

WHAT OTHER THREATS EXIST IN THE TROPICS?  Tropical Storm Fiona is no threat to the United States – it will pass near Bermuda over the weekend with minimal impacts likely.  Gaston – once a tropical storm – is now a remnant low pressure system in the central Atlantic Ocean.
